The USA, being one of the largest economies in the world, holds leading positions in both export and import of goods to the countries of Europe and Asia. Mainly, cars, industrial equipment, optical and medical devices, as well as medicines are transported from the USA to Ukraine. In this article we will consider the main aspects of the logistics process accompanying the import of goods from the USA.
Cost of transportation from the USA to Ukraine
To correctly calculate the cost of transportation from the U.S. to Ukraine, it is important to accurately determine the size of the shipment. Transportation costs depend on the dimensions and weight of the shipment, and the cubic meter is calculated taking into account the weight.
The maximum weight per cubic meter for air shipments is 167 kg, and for ocean shipments it is 1000 kg. Many factors affect the cost of transportation, including the ever-changing price of freight and currency fluctuations. Because of these changes, the cost of transportation from the U.S. to Ukraine can change over the course of a month, so it is important to plan ahead for ocean transportation.
A key aspect of transportation is the use of INCOTERMS rules, the international rules governing trade in goods. Ukraine and its foreign partners strictly adhere to these rules to optimize foreign economic activity.
When choosing EXW delivery terms from the hinterland of the USA, one should take into account additional costs for transportation of goods to the port, which may exceed the cost of sea freight.
The Covid-19 pandemic has caused global problems with maritime transportation. Since more than 80% of the world's cargo is transported by sea, the shortage of containers has caused container shipping prices to rise. However, since the beginning of 2022, ocean freight rates have fallen by 40-60%, improving the situation for shippers of cargo. Despite this, prices remain above pre-pandemic levels. The stabilization of the container situation will have a positive impact on the regularity of shipments.
Timeframe of sea transportation from USA to Ukraine
Delivery times are determined at the planning stage of the logistics process. Every day several large cargo ships leave for Europe carrying thousands of containers.
Delivery time from the USA depends on the distance of the starting point to the port. The US, being the fourth largest country in the world, covers a huge area. Manufacturing plants can be several days away from the port, which should be taken into account when planning your delivery. Transportation from the west coast of the US may take longer. It takes 4 to 5 weeks for a sea vessel to travel from the U.S. to Europe and Ukraine, and the time to load and unload containers can add another few days or weeks to that time frame.
Peculiarities of export clearance from the USA
All goods shipped from the U.S. abroad must be declared in the AESDirect system. This requires sending the shipper's export declaration and the ITN number on the bill of lading.
ITNThe ITN is a number generated by the Automated Export System (AES) that confirms that the U.S. export declaration (SED) has been accepted. This number allows U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to obtain information about the export shipment.
In some cases, completing an SED is not required, such as for shipments under $2500 or for domestic shipments within the U.S., such as from the mainland to Hawaii.
The cost of completing an export declaration depends on the number of HS codes. When shipping personal effects, only one Harmonized HS Code is usually required.
When booking ocean transportation, the shipper must provide an ITN number or export declaration at least 72 hours prior to the estimated time of departure of the shipment from the United States.
The export declaration requires a commercial invoice, an estimated packing list and a U.S. federal taxable EIN (EIN) or a copy of a passport.
Required documents for shipping goods from the U.S.

- Packing list
Additional documents may include:
- Packing list for international commercial shipment

- Certificate of Origin
- Dangerous Goods Declaration
