In winter 2023/2024, Ukraine exported a record 672,000 tons of sunflower oil! This is 25% more than in November and the highest monthly figure since January 2022!
Why is it important?
- This is the second highest result for December in the history of Ukrainian sunflower oil exports.
- It demonstrates the resilience of the Ukrainian agricultural sector in the face of war.
- It confirms the high demand for Ukrainian products in the global market.
The main importers of Ukrainian oil in December were Romania (25%) and Turkey (12%).
In September-December of 2023/24 MY, Ukraine exported almost 2 mln tonnes of sunflower oil, up 4% compared to the same period last season.
The war in Ukraine has caused a global shortage of sunflower oil, record price increases in other vegetable oils and disrupted supply chains.
Before the war, Ukraine and Russia controlled 77% of the world's oil exports. In 2021, Ukrainian enterprises exported 5.1 million tons of sunflower oil.
The blockade of the Black Sea ports by the Russian occupiers in 2022 practically stopped exports from Ukraine.
2022/23 MY was marked by a significant increase in the processing of sunflower seeds at domestic facilities following the ban on imports by some EU countries. This has led to increased production and exports of high value-added products.
